Connect to Rasberry Pi using SSH

Using SSH, you can remotely access the command line of a Raspberry Pi from another machine or device while on the same network. This means the Raspberry Pi can serve as a remote device, and you can access it using a client (SSH).

Enable SSH

By default Raspberry Pi OS has the SSH disabled. As a result, you need to enable it by following these steps:

  1. Launch Raspberry Pi Settings from the Preferences menu
  2. Navigate to a tab on Interfaces
  3. Next to SSH, Pick Activated
  4. Click on OK

Get IP Address

Without downloading additional software, you can use SSH to connect to your Raspberry Pi from a Linux device, a Mac, or another Raspberry Pi.

To link to it, you will need to know your Raspberry Pi’s IP address. Follow the these steps to identify the IP address.

  1. Launch Raspberry Pi Terminal
  2. Enter the following command:
hostname -I

3. Copy the first set of numbers

Connect from Terminal or Command Prompt

Now you’re ready to connect from your laptop computer. You can paste the following command into the terminal window to connect via SSH.
